Gerup Primary School

Some parts of world on the planet are still untouch and unknown such is a place in Sialum, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. This place remote and isolated from the main city center which is Lae 300km on the west. Gerup Primary School is located in the vicinity of Gerup village.
The school was established by the early Lutheran Missionary from Bavaria, Germany. It is currently a Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea education agency run schools. The teachers are all public servants and are paid by the government of Papua New Guinea. The teachers who are posted to this school mostly are locals. Due to the remoteness of the school not many outsiders go to teach. Also to reach the school area the teachers ascend up the mountains for nearly 1000m above sea level. It takes near 8 hours of solid walking. All heavy luggages and bags are carried by either students or their parents by assistance to these few teachers at the beginning and ending of academic year.
The school serves are total of three ward council areas. They are wards 10, 11 and 12. The total number of enrolment per years is about 400 students. The school has grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The feeder elementary school teach elementary 1, 2 and 3. After the 3rd level students graduate and proceed to do grade four at Gerup primary school. The children who qualify after gaining their primary education certificate continue secondary school either at Dregerhafen Agro/Tech Secondary or Sialum Technical Secondary Schools.
The picture shows the classrooms of Gerup Primary school. The permanent materials such as corrugated iron roofs, plywoods, glass lourvers, lourver blades, fly wires, desks, aluminum paper, chicken wires, square arc mesh, cement bags, etc are carried by the parents and citizens of the 3 ward council areas to the school. There is no road link to the school where the materials will be delivered by truck. All the timbers and timber products are obtained locally. The school has a chain saw which is used to chopped down trees. The chain saw is used to rip off timber materials from these fell trees.
